Organic is a Good Thing..

As more and more information becomes available to us via news reports and the Internet, we are becoming aware of the potential dangers of ingredients in some foods and chemicals used in traditional products like soaps, clothing and household cleaners. It can be very overwhelming when you decide to replace all your traditional products with organic. Not only can organic products be relatively expensive, but there are also a substantial amount of choices available.

Organic Foods

Many different types of organic foods are available at local farmer’s markets, specialty grocery stores and even large chain supermarkets. Carefully read all ingredients to make sure what you are buying is legitimately organic, and choose a few items at a time to replace. For example, you may wish to start with fruit. Most large grocery stores now have an organic section. Browse the fruits and compare prices. You may also wish to inquire as to the origin of these fruits and the practices of the farmers who are providing these items to the stores.

Organic Cleaners

Due to the nature of the chemicals contained in cleaners, waxes and other household products, this may be an area of interest for your entire family. Unlike food, you’re not likely to ingest the ingredients in household products, but the fumes and chemicals contained in these products can damage your body in other ways. Seek out alternatives that make use of natural substances when freshening, cleaning and polishing the items in your home.

Organic Clothing

Switching to organic clothing may also be important to you. Many traditional clothing manufacturers make use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers when growing crops and fibers. Over time, traces of these chemicals can contribute to health problems. All types of organic clothing, such as cotton, wool, hemp and soy are available in the market today.

Scarf Fashion Tips

Scarves are one of this year’s latest trends. What makes them so popular? Take a look at some of the fashion suggestions for wearing a scarf. Our scarves are handmade by fair trade artisans from global communities.

Scarf Fashion Tips

The scarf is one of the most versatile fashion accessories for women today. Available in solid colors, prints, and striped patterns, scarves are easy to match with most styles of women’s clothing. Deciding how to wear your scarf is a matter of personal taste. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Form-Fitting or Body-Hugging Dresses, Knits, and Sheaths

The scarf is an excellent fashion accessory to wear with form-fitting or body-hugging dresses, knits, and sheaths. This style of clothing opens up lots of fashion opportunities including the standard wrap-it-around the neck several times and the place-it-on-the-neck and allow it to hang down the back. One particularly bold suggestion is to wrap your scarf around your waist for a bold splash of color. If you like, you can wrap it around the waist, cross it in the front and loop it around the neck for a bold effect. Of course, you can simply wrap the scarf several times around the neck in the traditional fashion.

Sophisticated Eveningwear

Scarves are made with a wide assortment of fabrics suitable for eveningwear including silk, alpaca, and 100% cotton material. For backless evening dresses, loop your scarf around the neck once and then allow it to fall down your back. Since some styles are wider than others, you may want to try a few different widths to see which one works best with your evening dress. Sequined scarves are quite popular for holiday events.

Casual Wear

Thinner scarves are perfect any time of the year and can be worn with t-shirts, dresses, and sweaters for an attractive look. The thicker styles are more suitable to wear during the cooler months of the year. If you want to create a unique look with your scarf, wrap it around your neck once or twice and then slip it up onto your head.

The manner in which you decide to wear your scarf is important since the scarf is going to draw attention to wherever it is worn. Try several different fashion styles throughout the year and see which ones generate the most compliments. Then, you can make your decisions about how to wear your scarf using some of the reactions that your sense of fashion has created.

Economical Holiday Gifts

It really is the thought that counts.

With the holiday season approaching many people are thinking ‘How can I afford gifts for everyone?’ With a little creativity this problem is easily solved!

For the Coffee Drinker:
Place a $5 gift card to their favorite coffee house inside a mug, wrap in a few layers of tissue paper and tie off with ribbon.

Many stores offer $1 packets of coffee. Purchase several of these, place in a basket, and then your java lover will have a variety of flavors to try out!

Many coffee drinkers worry about enjoying their beverage of choice and then having coffee breath for the rest of the day. Take a coffee mug and fill it with mints, gum, or the breath freshener of choice. This gift can be wrapped in tissue paper or just given as is.

For the Cook:
Baskets are the best. Have a pasta lover? Fill a basket with several types of pasta and a jar of sauce. Dinner is served!

Most culinary enthusiasts can never have enough spices. Select several of their most used or favorite spices, place in a basket or even a bowl and present.

Kitchen utensils wear out quickly. Purchase several of the most commonly used utensils such as slotted spoons, serving spoons, and spatulas. Tie a ribbon or a piece of twine around them and a practical gift is created!

Have someone on your list who loves to bake? Buy a large mixing bowl and place various mixes inside. Not only will your baker love the mixes, the bowl can be used throughout the year.

For the Home:
Candles are always a great gift! There are a wide variety of scents and styles available at every price range. Buy one or several, wrap in tissue paper, and top with a bow!

So, what if there is someone on the list who loves candles but has already been given this great gift? Fear not, those candles will always need holders! Votive candle holders can be purchased rather inexpensively.

Pictures tell our lives and frames are a great gift idea. You can either select a special frame or a set of several frames. In addition, placing a picture in there of a shared event or a child will also create a keepsake.

The thought of giving holiday gifts does not have to be a headache. Keep the recipient in mind and there are plenty of ways to bring a smile to their face while keeping a budget in mind. Enjoy the holiday season and remember that it really is the thought that counts.
